Background

Alexander was born on 12 September 1894 at Churchview, Spey Street, Kingussie to John Dott (Carrier) and Helen Dott (m.s. Cumming). Alexander’s parents married on 29 June 1882 at Dallas.

William, his brother, also served with the 4th Camerons, died 12 October 1917 and he is remembered on The Tyne Cot Memorial. His parents were living at Church View, Spey Street, Kingussie at the time of their sons deaths.

Alexander’s birth certificate shows no middle name but many of his siblings had “Cumming” as their middle name so he may have taken this too in later life. This was his mother’s maiden name. He had three older sisters and two brothers

War Record

Alexander travelled to France on 19 February 1915 and was Killed in Action on 18 May 1915 at Festubert. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial. His brother William died at Passchendaele 12 October 1917 and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing.
