Background

John “Jack” was born on 12 March 1912 in Kingussie to Alexander Lobban and Mary Ann (m.s.McBain). His parents were married on 15 February 1907 in Pitlochry. 

In the 1921 Census he was living in King Street with his parents, four sisters and brother Alister. His father, a joiner, was working at Fraser’s Joiners in King Street, Kingussie. The joiner’s workshop had stood in King Street since the early 1900s and was moved to the Folk Museum in Newtonmore where it was laid out as if it were in the 1930s.

War Record

Jack died aged 32 years in Cathcart, Cape Province, South Africa from a gunshot wound. He was described as a farm assistant (ex soldier). His brother, Alexander, had died on Active Service 23 June 1940.

He is also remembered on the St Andrew’s United Free Church Memorial now in Kingussie Parish Church.
