Background

Duncan was born on 1 June 1920 at Campbell’s Buildings, Kingussie. His parents Finlay MacKintosh, a grocer’s assistant, (born 1887) and Bella m.s. McKenzie were married in Leith on 24 October 1913. In the 1911 Census his parents are living at Campbell’s Buildings, Kingussie.

In 1917, at the time of his brother Finlay’s birth, Duncan’s father is described as an assistant grocer and presently a gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery.

In the 1921 Census the family are living in the High Street, Kingussie and Duncan’s father is now a grocer working for J C Dallas, Miller also present is Duncan’s paternal grandfather James who is described as a sawmiller.

His eldest brother Finlay, who was born in 1917, married by Warrant of the Sheriff at the Castle, Inverness to Williamina MacPherson 15 June 1940. Finlay’s occupation was given as Tunnel Miner.

He had an older sister, Jean and older brothers, Angus and Donald, who also died in World War Two.  His older brother Finlay John MacKintosh survived.

War Record

Duncan died in Eritrea on 3 February 1941 during the campaign to occupy Italian East Africa. On 5 June 1942 his body was exhumed from Kassala Cemetery and re-interred in Keren (Cheren) War Cemetery on the 5 June 1942.

His grave has the inscription chosen by the family
