Background
William was born 2 January 1893 at Laggan, son of James Anderson and Ann m.s. McBain or McBean, of Balgown, Laggan, Kingussie. His parents had married at Meadowside, Alvie on 10th January 1884. His father was described as a farmer.
In the 1901 Census William is living at Catlodge Cottage, Laggan with his parents and siblings – Alexander, James and Isabella. The 1911 Census shows William living at Catlodge with his parents and siblings – James and Bella. William’s occupation at that time is described as a “House Carpenter.”
Prior to enlistment it is believed that he worked as a gamekeepr on the Castlemilk Estate, Lockerbie.
War Record
William enlisted at Dumfries. He travelled to France in July 1915.
His brother James also died in the First World War on 18th October 1918 aged 30 years. It is believed that his brother Alexander served in the Lovat Scouts.
