Background
Donald was born on 30 September 1898 at Banchor to Donald and Mary Black m.s. Macpherson. His father was described as a farm servant. They had married in Kingussie on 16 January 1885. Donald jnr. had a number of siblings – Lachlan, Maggie and Alick.
At the time of the 1911 Census Donald lived with his parents. His father’s occupation was described as a farm grieve. Donald was 12 years old and still at school.
His parents address at the time of his death was Banchor Cottage, Newtonmore.
War Record
He enlisted in Kingussie.
Following his death he was buried at the Bousbecque Communal German Military Cemetery and later his body was exhumed from the grave there and reburied in Pont-Du-Hem Cemetery on 7 January 1922.
Reported in the Aberdeen Daily Journal of 7 May 1918 that he was awarded the Military Medal.
Also commemorated on the Kingussie and Insh Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church and the Ring of Remembrance, Notre Dame de Lorette.
