Background
Sydney was born on 26 December 1866 at Nuide, Kingussie. His parents were Hugh, a farmer and J.P., and Margaret Elizabeth (m.s.McRae) Brown. He was educated at St Bees School, Cumberland.
At the time of the 1911 Census his parents are living at Westcott, West Terrace, Kingussie. It is believed that he went to Australia in 1907 where he subsequently worked as a stockman. Sydney had one sister, Shelia Annie Brown who died in Kingussie in 1965.
War Record
He enlisted on 22 August 1914. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT Star of Victoria on 20 October 1914. He is said to have served in Egypt and the Dardanelles.
Sydney’s Attestation Papers of 1914 shows him as having served with the Scottish Horse (South African War) but unfortunately no dates are given for this service. We have been unable to confirm this record but possibly this was between 1900 and 1902. Killed in action 7 August 1915 at Gallipoli and buried at Shell Green Cemetery.
Also commemorated on the Parish of Kingussie and Insh Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church and Panel 2 Australian War Memorial, Canberra.
