Background
William was born on 29 June 1885 to Donald and Jane Campbell m.s.Grant who had been married in Kingussie on 22 December 1871. His father was a journeyman mason. William had four brothers and three sisters. His father died when he was just 5 years old.
In the 1901 William was farm labourer who was living in Newtonmore with his widowed mother and 2 sisters and 2 brothers.
His address at the time of enlistment was Rannoch Cottage, Newtonmore although he seems to have enlisted at Cheltenham. His occupation is given as dog trainer. He had previously served in the 4th Cameron Territorials.
War Record
William was in France from 11 May 1915 until his death on 15 July 1916 when he died, at No 5 Casualty Clearing Station, of gun shot wounds to his legs received in action. He was aged 29 years.
