Background

Duncan James Carver born 3 May 1881 at Crubenmore Lodge, Laggan to John Carver, gamekeeper and his wife Anne Carver m.s. McDonald. John and Annie had married in Kingussie on 15th July 1875. Duncan had 6 brothers and 4 sisters, some were half siblings. His mother died in 1894. In the Census of 1901 Duncan is living with his grandfather at Ralia and working as a carpenter’s apprentice.

Duncan’s half brother, Trooper James Macpherson Carver, is buried at Laggan. He served with the Lovat Scouts in WW2 Service No 329892. He died at Thurso, the result of an accident, when the gable of a house fell on him on 29 April 1943.

War Record

Duncan initially enlisted with the 10th King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (Service Number 43667) before transfering to the Rifle Brigade.

He is also commemorated on the Laggan United Free Church Roll of Honour, Newtonmore War Memorial, the family gravestone in Laggan Churchyard and Kingussie and Insh Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church.
