Background
Donald was born on 27 July 1892 at Newtonmore to John Cattanach, baker, and his wife Christine (m.s. Ferguson). His parents had married at Craigdhu House, Laggan on 21 September 1888.
In the 1911 Census Donald is described as a labourer and he was living at home in Main Street, Newtonmore with his parents and three brothers and two sisters.
Prior to enlisting Donald was employed by Mr Devas, lessee of Chapelpark Shootings, Kingussie. Donald’s family lived at Croft Beg, Newtonmore at the time of his death.
War Record
Donald joined the Badenoch Company of the Camerons in October 1914 and travelled to France on 9 May 1915. He died at the Battle of Festubert.
He is also commemorated on the Newtonmore War Memorial and Kingussie and Insh Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church
