Background

John was born 28 August 1885 in Newtonmore. His parents were Gregor and Jane Fyfe m.s. Cattanach who had married in Newtonmore on 23 June 1879. His father is described as a “Railway Labourer”.

In the 1901 Census John is living with his parents and siblings Alice, Jane and Marjory at High Road. His older sister Annie is not recorded there. His father’s occupation is described as a “Railway Mason Labourer.” In the 1911 Census the family are living at Larchfield, Main Street, Newtonmore. John’s father is described as a greenkeeper, working at the golf course, while John is described as a gamekeeper who speaks both Gaelic and English.

War Record

John may have enlisted in Newtonmore. His medal record shows that on 9 May 1915 as number 2442 he was drafted as a replacement from the 2/4th Cameron Highlanders.

He is also commemorated on the Newtonmore War Memorial, the Kingussie and Insh Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church, the Ring of Remembrance at Notre Dame de Lorette and on the family gravestone at Banchor Burial Ground.
