Background
John was born on 30 December 1892 at Phones, Kingussie to John Hendry (Gamekeeper) and Ann Hendry (m.s.Stronach).
In the 1911 Census John was living with his parents and some of his siblings at Phones Cottage, Kingussie and he was described as aged 18 and a gamekeeper. John’s father had died by the time of his death and his mother, Ann, was living at Invertruim, Newtonmore. John had five brothers and six sisters all born in Kingussie.
War Record
John died of measles at Bedford barracks on 1 January 1915 and he is buried in Kingussie Churchyard. John MacIntosh, also died of measles at Bedford, on the 5 January 1915 and he is buried in St Columba Old Churchyard Mill Road, Kingussie.
The Bedfordshire Times reported in January 1915 that between August 1914 and 9 January 1915 the Highland Division lost 27 men to measles. 14 of them were 4th Cameron Highlanders and in total the Battalion had 141 confirmed cases. This delayed the Battalion’s departure for France.
