Background
Research suggests that the Alexander MacDonald, described below, is the person remembered on the Free Church Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church.
Alexander was born at Carnan, Howmore, South Uist on 6 September 1896 to Lachlan, a blacksmith, and Catherine MacDonald (m.s. MacDonald). His birth was registered at Howmore. His parents were married on 7 February 1893 at Howmore. Their address was give as Clachan, Eochar, South Uist at the time of Alexander’s death.
In 1911 Census Alexander was aged 14 and boarding with Mary Souter at Spey View, Spey Street, Kingussie. His place of birth was given as South Uist. It is likely that he was boarding as he was attending Kingussie Higher Grade School. There were seven scholars including Alexander, from South uist, who were residing with Mrs Souter. Her husband Elias Souter was in the merchant navy.
War Record
Alexander enlisted on 12 November 1914 at Inverness. He died 16 February 1915 and has no known grave and is commorated on the Le Touret Memorial to the Missing along with a number of others from Kingussie and the surrounding area. He is also remembered on the St Andrews Free Church Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church and on the Ring of Remembrance, Notre Dame de Lorette
