Background

William was born on 9 October 1883 at High Street, Kingussie son of William (Spirit Dealer) and Helen MacGillivray (m.s. Stewart) who married in Kelvin, Glasgow on 20 August 1879.  In 1891 he was living at the Royal Hotel, Kingussie and by 1911 living at Ashton, Gynack Road, Kingussie.

In the 1911 Census William was described as aged 27, and a house carpenter.

William was the Captain of the Kingussie shinty team who were the winners of The Camanachd Cup on 4 August 1914. In 1978 William’s player’s cap and War Medals were gifted to the Highland Folk Museum as was his silver mounted caman – see photos below.

William had three sisters Isabella, Helen and Robina.

War Record

William travelled to France on 19 February 1915 and was Killed in Action 18 May 1915 at Festubert. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial to the Missing.

Also commemorated on the Kingussie War Memorial and Kingussie and Insh Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church and the Ring of Remembrance, Notre Dame de Lorette.
