Background
Donald was born at Spey Street, Kingussie on 4 January 1894 to Angus McKenzie, Surfaceman, and Jessie (m.s. McLean) of Ashwood Cottage, Kingussie. Donald’s father died in 1910.
In the 1911 Census Donald, aged 17, was working as a Railway Clerk with the North British Railway Company.
His brother Archibald was Killed in Action 18 April 1918 and may also have been in 1st Bn Cameron Highlanders. Archibald is buried at Vieille Chapelle.
In addition to Archie, Donald had three younger sisters and three brothers.
War Record
Donald served with the Gordon Highlanders and died of wounds on 16 November 1916 at Rouen probably in one of the many large military hospitals. He is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. He was probably wounded at the Battle of Ancre on 13 November 1916.
