Background
Roderick ’s father Roderick MacLennan and Flora McLean m.s. Dewar were married 20 July 1892 at Kingussie. Roderick is described as the Head Master, Kingussie. Flora was the daughter of the Free Church Minister.
Roderick was born on 17 November 1896 at Kingussie. He was educated at Grantown Grammar School where he was Dux. He entered Aberdeen University in 1914 with a Redhythe Bursary. In April 1915, before joining the Army, Roderick passed the M.A. examination in Classics and English at Aberdeen University.
Roderick had two younger sisters Jessie and Helen. At the time of his death his parents were living at the Grammar School, Grantown-on-Spey
War Record
He joined the 4th Gordon Highlanders in April 1915 and after 5 months training went to France on 1 September 1915. He was reported missing and then killed in action at Hooge, on 25 September 1915, after being only three weeks at the Front. He is thought to have fallen at Sanctuary Wood. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing at Ypres.
He is also commemorated on the Kingussie War Memorial, Kingussie and Insh Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church, Grantown on Spey War Memorial and Grantown School WWI Memorial, currently in Grantown Primary School.
