Background
William Dunlop Mcleod was born on 16 December 1896 at the Lighthouse, Kinnaird Head, Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire to Alexander MacLeod (Lighthouse Keeper) and Jessie MacLeod (m.s. Boreham). His parents had married in 1883 at Rhuvaal on Islay where Alexander was an assistant lighthouse keeper and Jessie the daughter of the Principle Lighthouse Keeper at Rhuvaal.
William’s family seem to have moved often as his father was a lighthouse keeper. After time in Orkney, in the 1901 and 1911 Census the family are living in Edinburgh. William’s mother was widowed and Jessie returned to the town of her birth with the seven children. On William’s death he is described as son of Mrs Jessie Macleod of 19, Marchmont Crescent, Edinburgh. William had two older brothers, three older and one younger sister.
