In the 1911 Census Lewis is recorded as a Gamekeeper, at the Keepers House, Glentromie.
Lewis was a member of the 1914 Kingussie Camanachd Cup winning shinty team.
Lewis had one sister Jane (Jeannie). Two weeks after Lewis death Jeannie had a baby boy whom she named Lewis John Macpherson Richard. James Richard, his brother in law and fellow Gamekeper on Glentromie, applied to join the Army and he subsequently enlisted in the 8th Cameron Highlanders.
