Background
George was born in Perth on 25 January 1884 and educated at North Port School, Perth. His parents were John McPherson, House Painter, and Helen (m.s. Buist) who married in Dundee 1874.
Before enlisting George worked as a tailor in Kingussie. In 1911 George, aged 27, of Dunbarry Cottages, Kingussie married Christina Mathieson, 19, of Station Cottages, Newtonmore. The 1911 Census describes George as a Tailor living at Dunbarry Cottages boarding with Charles Smith.
In October 1918 his wife, Christina, was living at Caledonian House, Spey Street, Kingussie with their children, Elspeth Helen born 21 June 1912, Christina Jane 14 January 1914, Catherine Johan born 26 January 1915 and a fourth daughter, Georgeina born 23 February 1916. George’s son also named George was born 12 September 1918 after his father had died. Military records spell the family name as McPherson while the family gravestone has the spelling as MacPherson.
War Record
George enlisted 22 November 1915 when living at Dunbarry Cottages, Kingussie. He was first wounded on 4 August 1917.
George died of wounds 29 March 1918 aged 27. He was buried at Haringhe (Bandaghem) Military Cemetery.
