Background

John was born on 9 February 1891 at Strone, Kingussie, Inverness-shire son of Ronald and Elizabeth (Betsie) Macpherson (m.s. Guthrie), of Burnbank, East Terrace, Kingussie. His parents had married in Minnesota in 1888 where his father was a plasterer.

John was a member of the successful Kingussie Camanachd Club team that won both the Camanachd Cup and the McTavish Cup in 1914. He ran a sports shop in Kingussie High Street and his family opened a highly regarded sports shop in Inverness.

His cousin James Blackadder MacPherson also died in WW1. John had one older brother born in Minnesota, a younger brother and five younger sisters. The younger siblings all being born in Kingussie.

War Record

John was Killed in Action on 29 May 1917, aged 26. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated at Arras Memorial.

He is also commerated on the Kingussie War Memorial, Kingussie and Insh Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church, St Andrew’s United Free Church Memorial now in Kingussie Parish Church and Ring of Rememberance, Notre Dame-de-Lorette.
