Background
Rowallan was born on 15 September 1883 at Knockiefin, Edinkillie, Morayshire. Son of George and Jessie (m.s. Fraser) Paterson and later they lived at the Cottage, Speyside (Distillery) Cottages, Kingussie. He was brother to Annie, Jessie, Jane, Grace, Margaret, Christina and George. His name has also been spelt Roualan or Roualeyn known as Roy. His father was a maltsman at the distillery.
1891 Census living in High Street, Kingussie and in 1901 in Spey Street, Kingussie. By 1911 living at 21 Hanover Street, Edinburgh as a painter. Roualan (Roy) married Cissie Solomon on 13 May 1912 in Edinburgh. Their daughter Louise Jessie was born 18 November 1912 at 9 Panmure Place, Edinburgh
War Record
Roy enlisted in Edinburgh on 8 July 1916 and he gave his occupation as a house painter. He served in the 10th Cameron Highlanders and then 8th/10th Bt Gordon Highlanders. Roualeyn died of wounds on 10 April 1917, (the day after his wife’s brother Mark) aged 33 at No 19 Casuality Clearing Station, Arras and he was buried in the Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, Pas de Calais, France. His widow was awarded a pension for herself and one child of 18/9 per week with effect from 26 November 1917. He made a will when he enlisted and his estate was worth £102.
Roy’s brother in law (his wife’s brother) also died during World War I. He was Private Mark Solomon 23rd (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers the son of Louis Solomon(Smalewitz), a Tailor, and Hannah (m.s. Scorupa). He died on 9 April 1917, aged 30,
and is buried in the Roclincourt Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais.
Roy and his brother-in-law Mark Solomon are both remembered on the Jewish War Memorial, Piershill Cemetery, Edinburgh. Roy’s wife, Cissie, is buried in this cemetery.
On Monday, 8 March 1920, The Scotsman reported
“There has been erected in Piershill Cemetery, a parents’ war memorial to the 19 Jewish soldiers of Edinburgh who fell in the war. ”
He is also remembered on the Kingussie and Insh Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church, the Piershill Jewish Memorial, Edinburgh and the Ring of Remembrance, Notre Dame de Lorette.
