Background
Son of John McGregor Stewart and Elizabeth (Betsy) Stewart m.s. McKenzie of Elm Cottage Newtonmore. Peter was born 14 November 1893 at Drumguish, Insh when his father is described as a gamekeeper. His parents married in Inverness on 14 February 1879.
In the 1901 Census the family are living at the Shepherd’s House, Ruthven where his father was a shepherd. In the 1911 Census Peter is aged 17 living at Rose Cottage, Main Street, Newtonmore and his occupation described as a “Hotel Boots”. Before going to Dingwall he was employed at the Royal Hotel, Kingussie and Craigmhor Private Hotel, Newtonmore.
He had older brothers Angus, John, David and Alexander and a younger Andrew in addition to sisters Christina, Jessie Ann, Elizabeth and Catherine. It is understood that three of his brothers served with the Cameron Highlanders.
War Record
He was with the B (Dingwall) Company, 4th Seaforth Highlanders. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission recorded his death as 11 May but the Graves Registrations Report states 8 May 1915. In early 1924 his body was exhumed from Vieille Chapelle Old Military Cemetery and reburied at Cabaret-Rouge Cemetery. He is also remembered on the St Andrew’s United Free Church Memorial and Kingussie and Insh Memorial both in Kingussie Parish Church and the on the Ring of Remembrance, Notre Dame de Lorette.
