Background
John was born on 30 April 1899 to Jane Ann Young at Garrowslack, Mosstowie, Elgin. His sister Jessie Ann was born in 1897 at Coulnakyle Sawmill, Nethybridge and his brother John McGillivray was born in 1899 at Garrowslack, Mosstowie, Elgin.
In the 1911 Census Jessie and John are with their mother Jane living at Nuide, Kingussie. At the time of his death his mother was living at Distillery Cottage, Kingussie.
War Record
John served with the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division which was a United Kingdom infantry division of the First World War. It was originally formed as the Royal Naval Division at the outbreak of the war, from Royal Navy and Royal Marine reservists and volunteers, who were not needed for service at sea. The 63rd (Royal Naval) Division took part in the Battle of Cambrai 8-9 October 1918. John died at Cambari 21 November 1918 possibly from wounds received in the October battle. He is buried at Cambrai East Military Cemetery.
