Background
William was born at Laurel Cottage, Kingussie on 4th February 1917. His birth was registered, in Kingussie, by his grandfather, John MacKintosh, as his father, James MacKintosh, a Tailor and Clothier, was serving as a Lance Corporal with the Cameron Highlanders in World War One at that time. His parents James MacKintosh and Janet Renwick (m.s. Hogarth) were married in Galashiels on 28th April, 1916.
In the 1921 Census William age four is living with his parents in High Street, Kingussie and his father is described as a tailor.
William married Joan R. MacKintosh (m.s. Brand) of London as recorded on the family gravestone at Kingussie Cemetery. They were married in September 1942 at Finsbury.
War Record
William was on detachment from Bomber Command to Coastal Command No. 19 Group at the Military Base St Eval, Cornwall. Flying in an Armstrong Whitworth Whitely Mk V (AD691). The aircraft was shot down by Ju88s on 30 November 1942 while on an anti submarine patrol to the Bay of Biscay in weather of low cloud with heavy showers. The aircraft went missing from the patrol and the crew were all eventually listed as previously reported missing, now presumed killed in action. The aircraft and all six crew were lost without trace. William and all crew members are commemorated on the RAF Memorial to the Missing at Runneymede.
After the war his medals were sent to his wife at Lyndean, Kingussie
He is also remembered on the Stanton Harcourt War Memorial, Kingussie War Memorial and St Andrew’s United Free Church Memorial now in Kingussie Parish Church.
