Background
Alexander was born on 25 August 1917 at Rowan Cottage, King Street, Kingussie. His parents were Alexander Peter MacBain, farm servant, and Jane Robertson “Jeanie” m.s. Aithie who were married on 15 June 1916 and their marriage was registered at Pencaithland, Edinburgh.
Alexander had two sisters, Jeannie who was born in 1925 and died in 1999 aged 73 and is buried in Kingussie Cemetery and Elizabeth Allen MacBain who was born on 15 October 1920 at Gordonhall, Kingussie.
Alexander’s mother Jane “Jeanie” died at Caledonian House, Kingussie 29 October 1947.
War Record
In June 1940, the Territorial 4th Battalion, was captured covering the evacuation from Dunkirk.
Alexander died on 4 or 5 June 1940 during the withdrawal to Dunkirk and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Dunkirk Memorial to The Missing along with some 50 others from the 1st and 4th Bns of the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders.
