Background
William was born on 4 July 1891 at Milton of Nuide, Kingussie to Alexander Curley (Coachman) and Marjory (m.s.MacDonald) Curley and then of Cameron Terrace, Kingussie. William’s parents married on 8 November 1888 at Kingussie.
In the 1911 Census William is described as an apprentice grocer and both a Gaelic and English speaker. Both William and his brother John served in 4th Cameron Highlanders.
Prior to enlistment he worked for Mr Donald Grant, merchant, Kincraig, Kingussie.
War Record
William travelled to France in February 1915 and was Killed in Action 17 May 1915 at Festubert. He is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial. At the time of his death Mrs Curley was living at Duke Ville, Kingussie.
The Scotsman reported on 13 July 1915 that his brother John was seriously wounded on the same day and was in an English hospital while another brother was a non commissioned officer in the 2/4th Cameron Highlanders.
