Background

Ewan was born on 2 August 1895 at Station Cottages, Kingussie. His parents, Roderick and Elizabeth Mackenzie (m.s. Fraser).

1911 Census his father was described as a railway surfaceman. Ewan was working at Kingussie Railway Station in 1912. When Ewan died his parents were still living at 5 Railway Cottages, Kingussie.

Ewan had four siblings James John, born 1888 who died (aged 9) on 18 September 1897, Duncan born 1890, Elizabeth Christina born 1891 and Helen (Nellie) Catherine born 1893.

War Record

Ewan was Killed in Action at Ypres 31 July 1917, aged 22. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres. See letter below regarding search for his remains and report by 7th Cameron Highlanders.

He is also commemorated on the Kingussie War Memorial, Kingussie and Insh Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church and St Andrew’s United Free Church Memorial also now in Kingussie Parish Church.
