Background

Lewis was born on 26 April, 1898 at Station House, Redcastle son of Lewis Robert Murray, Station Master, and Elsie Murray (m.s. Lendrum).  Lewis parents were married in 1892 at Rathven. At the 1901 Census the family are living at the Porter’s House, Hill of Fearn where Lewis father was a railway porter. 

By the 1911 Census the family have moved to Station Cottage, Daviot where Lewis father was a pointsman. At the time of Lewis death his parents were living at “Corriegour.” High Street, Kingussie. In March 1918 Lewis snr was living at Gergask, Laggan.

Lewis had two younger brothers, two older brothers and two younger sisters. His sister E. Murray taught at Kingussie Higher Grade School at the time of his death.

War Record

Prior to leaving for Belgium Lewis was a clerk in the Town Chamberlain’s Office, Inverness. 

Lewis enlisted in August 1916 and following 9 months training went to France in May 1917. He was Killed in Action on 12 October 1917 aged 19, at Passchendaele.  His body was not recovered and he is commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing beside 36,800 other missing. Lewis is also remembered on the Daviot and Dunlichity War Memorial.

His death was announced in the Courant on 9 November 1917.
