Background
William was born on the 22 February 1892 at King Street, Kingussie to John Dott (Carrier) and Helen Dott (m.s. Cumming). Mother was known as Ellen.
William’s parents, John and Helen Dott, were married on 29 June 1882 at Dallas. They had three daughters and three sons. William was a baker and worked for James Grant, Bakers, Kingussie.
William’s younger brother Alexander also died on 18 May 1915. Alexander’s body was also not recovered and he is remembered on the Le Touret Memorial. At the time of his death Mrs Dott was living at Caledonian House, Kingussie.
War Record
William signed up for service on 31 March 1908 at Kingussie with the 4th Cameron Highlanders as a volunteer with the Territorial Battalion Cameron Highlanders. As a Territorial William agreed to serve overseas while at Bedford Barracks 8 September 1914. William travelled to France, having embarked in Southampton, on 19 February 1915. He was wounded in action on 8 March 1915 and was killed at the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) 1917. His body was not recovered and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing alongside almost 35,000 others.
