Background
Archibald was born in Kingussie on 5 February 1896 to Angus Mackenzie and Jessie (m.s. MacLean), Ashwood Cottage, Kingussie.
In 1911 Archibald was living in High Street, Kingussie and working as a Newsboy at the Railway Bookstall. Prior to enlisting he was an assistant with Mr Cumming, butcher, High Street, Kingussie.
Archibald’s (Archie) parents were married in Laggan on 7 January 1892 at St Michael’s Roman Catholic Chapel, Laggan, Strathmashie. His mother Jessie, 19, a Domestic Servant, was from Lagg, Laggan and his father Angus, 26, a Labourer, from Spey Street, Kingussie. At the time of the death of their sons their parents were living at Ashwood Cottage, Kingussie.
Archibald’s elder brother Donald served with the Gordon Highlanders and Died of Wounds on 16 November 1916. He is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. Archibald and Donald also had three younger sisters and three brothers.
War Record
Archibald was Killed in Action on 18 April 1918. He may also have been in 1st Bn. Cameron Highlanders. Archibald’s remains were exhumed from the King’s Liverpools Graveyard, Cuinchy and reburied at Vieille Chapelle.
Also remembered on the Kingussie and Insh Memorial in Kingussie Parish Church and the Ring of Remembrance, Notre Dame de Lorette.
